Typology

Posted on January 4, 2023 by Brian

Typology is a method of biblical interpretation whereby certain events, characters, and symbols in the Old Testament are recognized as foreshadowing or pointing to similar events, characters, and symbols in the New Testament. This type of interpretation is important for understanding the Bible as it provides an explanation of how the New Testament is rooted in the history, culture, and events of the Old Testament.

The typological interpretation of Scripture is based on the belief that God’s plan of salvation was revealed in the Old Testament and is fulfilled in the New. In other words, the New Testament is a fulfillment of the Old Testament. This is seen in the fact that many of the New Testament events and characters were foreshadowed in the Old Testament. For example, the prophet Isaiah foretold of a coming Messiah, a figure who would come to bring salvation to mankind. This prophecy was fulfilled in the New Testament in the person of Jesus Christ.

The typological interpretation of Scripture is also seen in the symbolism used in the Bible. Symbols such as the Ark of the Covenant, the Temple, the Tabernacle, and the Passover Lamb are all symbols of redemption that point to the coming of Jesus. These symbols not only foreshadowed Jesus’ coming but also served to teach us about the nature of salvation. They demonstrate how God’s plan of salvation was to be fulfilled.

Typology is an important part of biblical interpretation as it helps us to understand how the New Testament is rooted in the Old Testament. It also helps us to understand the symbolism and its deeper meaning. By recognizing the typological meaning of the events and characters of the Bible, we are able to better understand the plan of salvation and the role of Jesus in that plan.
